Independent Welfare and Training Consultant
Private therapist
I worked as a private therapist offering counselling support
for a wide range of physical and emotional problems. Rehabilitation
counselling was an area of specialty that I developed and
requiring me to work with insurance companies and the legal
profession. This required me to professionally counsel my
clients and also to know the available community resources
to refer clients for additional support. I have therefore
developed links with the rehabilitation centres, Family Worker
Schemes, the Women's Refuge, sexual assault workers, mental
health nurses and the Community Health Centre.
Welfare Consultant
I worked with a number of corporate and government organisations
as a welfare and training consultant. I was required to meet
either individually or with groups of staff to determine the
welfare issues and to help the staff advocate for assistance
from within the organisation. Staff redundancies, organisational
change and staff conflict were typical of the issues I was
involved in. Again in this capacity I was required to liaise
with the Community Health Centre, the Women's Refuge, Sexual
Assault workers, Information and Neighbourhood Centres, Rural
Access Programs for Women, and local psychologists.
Migrant welfare and education was the essence
of a program I worked on at Bathurst Primary School in1995.
The program involved helping a Chinese speaking family from
Brunei to settle in Bathurst. This involved providing language
and community support plus negotiating with interpreter services,
New Arrivals Program, the Department of Immigration and the
local International Friendship Group.
Consultant for Students with Disabilities:
TAFE Disabilities Consultant 1986-1992
I set up the initial disability service for the Central West
region of TAFE. I worked with people with all manner of disabilities
and with all the relevant advocacy and support groups. Groups
included HACS, DOCS, CES, Department of Social Security, Rehabilitation
Centres, Information and Neighbourhood Centres, Department
of Health - Disability Service, parent and consumer groups
of disability services. The position involved meeting and
working with a large variety of people from government and
non-government bodies to ensure equality of access to TAFE.
I also worked on the TAFE external program "Working
with People with Disabilities". In co-operation with
the Outreach Co-ordinators and the local disability services,
I developed and ran a number of education programs for carers.
These courses proved very successful in finding employment
for the students.
Communication Skills Teaching Experience
I was the Principal of the Improved Communication Skills
Franchise. The franchise specialised in developing and presenting
effective communication skills packages. Some of the courses
I taught included: Writing Workplace Documents, Advanced Reading
Skills, Plain English Writing, Negotiating and Winning. Some
of the other courses which I developed particularly to suit
specific needs included: Group Work, Stress Management, Team
Building, Women's Mentoring Program, English for Non-Native
Speakers, Accent Reduction Program, Life Management Skills,
Study Skills, Time Management, Coaching and Counselling.
I have also written two books in these communication areas
and a third and fourth are being worked on at present. The
first is called Learning Wealth - The A-Z of Loving to Learn,
this book is now being distributed both in Australia and New
Zealand. Learning Wealth has also been recommended as a text
for the TAFE pathways program. The second is called Reading
Wealth - Discover How to Improve Your Reading and Comprehension
in 6 Easy Steps. The third is called Living Wealth - How to
get 12 Parts of Your Life into Balance and Harmony and the
fourth is called Writing Wealth; How to write clearly, persuasively
and professionally.
